You Are the Future

Sucianik, student of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau
Riau, Indonesia

Being a child in my village is never easy. I went to school on foot, sometimes we passed flooding. I often swim because we have to pass a very bad bridge from my home to school. My father was not like other fathers who could pick their children up from school. I wore bad shoes and clothes. Yet, my mother always told me that it is okay to wear them as long as I am being a smart student at school.

“Dear, people do not see us from our clothes. Yet, from the way we think and the way we speak.” My mother said me.
I did not know what she talks actually. I was just a little child. Yet, I attempted frantically to be independent. The only one reason is to help my mother and father. It is because they do it for surviving and having a better life.
I promised myself. “I want to make them proud. I will be a foreign minister of Indonesia.” So I started to study and work hard. I did many things. I learnt some foreign languages. I joined debate contest, writing competition, karate, social organization, teenager organization that work in counseling to help teenager solving their problems. I was being the leader of that organization. It works for helping student in Senior High School and Junior High School. I also teach children at orphanage. Well, I see a different world through the children eyes. Whatever poverty almost kills their life, but they still have chance to gain a bright future. It makes me realizing a new thing that changing is inside of ourselves.
What did not I do for creating a better life? I truly stop complaining and start to see the blessings I have. As the result, successes rushed to my life. Most of all, now I have known that decision to create a meaningful life is in our hand. We are the changing that we seek.
